Based upon animal creation stories from all over the African continent, ‘Tinga Tinga Tales’ brings to life tall tales of how your favorite animals came to be the way they are today. Produced on location in Kenya by Tiger Aspect Productions in conjunction with Homeboyz Entertainment, all images in the series are hand painted by local African artists and then computer animated in a studio set up in Nairobi.

Half the profits Tiger Aspect makes from the show will be invested in education in the region and the studio will continue to provide jobs for a new animation industry in East Africa after production on the show completes in 2010.

Children can also interact with their favorite animal characters in the safari world of Tinga Tinga Tales on iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. Bursting with vibrant art and sounds, ‘Tinga Tinga Tales’ includes 9 fun minigames with three difficulty settings.

Where Tinga Tinga comes from

The show was visually inspired by the Tingtinga art of Tanzania, hence the name ‘Tinga Tinga Tales’ .

The Tingatinga artists paint wonderful animals in bright colours with an intricate use of pattern and design. The Tingatinga collective grew from the work of one man – Eduard Saidi Tingatinga – over 40 years ago. Now there are over 700 Tingatinga artists in Tanzania. Tiger Aspect is working with artistes from the Tingatinga Arts Co-Operative based at Morogoro Store in Dar es Salaam.

African animation is growing, what with ‘Bino and Fino’ introducing us to African cultures, and now ‘Tinga Tinga Tales‘, it is only a matter of time before African animation becomes a solid part of international film and television.

‘Tinga Tinga Tales’ is on CBeebies channel on BBC Television, and PlayHouse Disney (2011).
